The Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development launched the National Industry Information System (NIIS) https://slenterprises.gov.lk, a new digital platform to bring together and manage all information related to economic and industrial activities across Sri Lanka, yesterday (6 ) in Colombo.
The system acts as a central database for industry information. It covers a wide range of aspects such as industry basic details, business classification, legal status, registration information, UN classification, industry scale, production data, raw material use, market coverage, employment, energy and fuel consumption, waste management and disposal methods.
Under this initiative Industrialists can register by creating their own user account or by submitting information through authorized government officials. Before approving each application, officials will review and verify it and may also conduct site inspections if necessary. Upon successful registration, each industry will be issued an official certificate recognizing it as a registered entity in the National Industry Database. To maintain the accuracy and reliability of the data, registered industries are required to update their information annually.
The NIIS platform provides Application Programming Interface (API) access for authorized entities such as government agencies, banks, and regulatory authorities to verify the authenticity and validity of registered industries. Furthermore, selected non-sensitive information will also be accessible to the public to promote transparency and informed decision-making. This new system will serve as a valuable tool for policy formulation, market research, competitive analysis, and strategic planning, paving the way for Sri Lanka’s industrial sector to achieve sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
Addressing the event Sunil Handunnetti, Minister of Industries and Entrepreneur Development said the launch of NIIS was an important first step in the digitalization of industries in Sri Lanka because there is no correct database about Lankan industries anywhere. He said although there is data about industries there is no single place where this information is stored. Therefore students in universities, decision makers in industries and others face hindrance in obtaining data for policy planning and implementation.
“ Therefore we are commencing the implementation of the National Industry Information System to gather data of all industries small, medium and large and provide it to those who need it,” he said. The Minister also said the Industries Ministry is bound to protect sensitive information provided to them and as the Industries Minister he will guarantee that. He said to obtain all other government services it is mandatory to get registered with NIIS and obtain the certificate.
Chathuranga Abeysinghe, Deputy Minister of Industries and Entrepreneur Development said from a government perspective, it was more than important that they had the right information when making decisions. He said this initiative will allow them to make informed decisions on policy, make interventions and also see problems. Abeysinghe also said the government is taking a strong initiative on drug prevention and rehabilitation and they also need to be part of this journey and be part of it.
“And I would invite the industry to look at the possibility of integrating this rehabilitated youth into the industry going forward. We do see a scarcity in skill, but after we do this rehabilitation, we need to integrate them into the society. So the industries have a great responsibility to be able to absorb those rehabilitated,” he added.
