Invitation of proposals – Metal scrap for local industries

Invitation of proposals for the identification of value-addition opportunities for metal raw materials and by-products, and the assessment of the required quantity of metal scrap for local industries

Due to exporting a large quantity of raw materials and by-products related to Sri Lanka’s metal industry sector without significant value addition or as scrap metal, important opportunities for local industrial development, job creation, import substitution, and increasing export revenue are being lost.

Therefore, information and proposals are invited from Sri Lankan metal industry sector industrialists, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, investors, technical institutions, and other interested parties as follows:

These proposals should be submitted detailing how to promote local industries by identifying capabilities to locally utilize existing metal industry sector by-products and scrap metal in Sri Lanka to transform them into products with higher value addition.

Proposals for this purpose can be submitted along with the following aspects:

  • Value-Addition: Opportunities – Capabilities to locally utilize metal raw materials and by-products currently exported with low value addition or as scrap metal (e.g., Mill scale, Mill powder, Zinc Ash, Al Ash, Al dross, Lead acid battery refinery waste – Pb slug, Pb sulphate sulfuric acid, etc.) to convert them into higher value products.
  • Import Substitution Opportunities – Capabilities to locally manufacture metal products currently imported, by using metal raw materials and scrap metal.
  • Value-Added Products for Export – Opportunities to export finished goods and industrial products with higher value addition instead of scrap metal or low value-added materials.
  • Technology and investment Needs – New technology, machinery, investments, and inter industry linkages required to develop the local metal industry.
  • Policy and Regulatory Proposals – Policy and regulatory proposals required to strengthen the local metal industry and raise local value addition.

If you intend to use metal scrap for local industries or to produce value-added export goods, please provide information regarding the required quantity, type, and quality of metal scrap according to your proposal via the OR code below. This aims to obtain an assessment regarding the local demand for metal scrap.

Send your information and proposals by registered post to: Chairman, Industrial Development Board of Ceylon, No. 615, Galle Road, Katubedda, Moratuwa, or via email to dg@idb.lk.
